Forest Schools!

Year 2 were the first to enjoy Forest Schools this year! They hunted for minibeasts and found loads! - Slugs, caterpillars, beetles, worms, spiders galore! They predicted where they might find them (linking to their work in science on habitats), caught them in magnification pots to look more closely at them and identified them through an identification key. They also looked at seasonal change, comparing this to their last visit in Year 1 when the bluebells were out, but they have all died off now. The leaves falling from the trees created a beautiful red and gold blanket!
A lovely time of the year to enjoy our woods!

The Dinosaur Company's visit to Plumberow that was postponed from earlier in the year eventually took place just before the end of term! Pupils spent a day enjoying Dinosaur based activities in classrooms and then spent time 'in with the dinosaurs', researching and fact finding! What a FANTASTIC day!

PE Challenge Day!

posted 29 Jun 2017, 03:09 by Sheila Bacon   [ updated 29 Jun 2017, 09:54 ]

12 Plumberow Year 2s, 6 girls and 6 boys, went to Greensward Academy to take part in a PE Challenge Day.
They were joined by 6 children from Westerings, 5 from Hockley, and 4 from Ashingdon.
The idea of the day was for the 4 schools to come together and work with each other whilst taking part in sporting activities.
During the day, in mixed teams, 6 teams in total, the pupils took part in different sports, testing themselves in a team and individually.
The children took part in:
A Warm up, Putting, Frisbee Dodge Howler Throwing, Long jump, Diamond Cricket
Rob the Nest, A Gutter race, Blob Race and Square Relay Race!
The children continued on each activity until they fully understood the game, and how to get the best results,
Each child from each School was a great example and each School can feel very proud of them!
A presentation at the end of the day saw the children awarded with a certificate and Multi-Skill medal.
A special mention must go out to the Greensward Year 9s who helped out throughout a very, tiring, rewarding, skillful day!!'

Dinosaur Day!

posted 4 May 2017, 12:44 by Sheila Bacon   [ updated 5 May 2017, 10:24 ]

At Hadleigh Country Park, Year 2 had a treasure hunt on the way through the fields, past the cows (and the cow pat!) to the woods where they did a range of dinosaur themed activities. They built nests and filled them with eggs, which the scavenger dinosaurs then stole from!
They found pictures of dinosaurs and classified them into herbivore, carnivore, omnivore or pescivore, as well as making a 'mini dino world' and a huge picture of a dinosaur!
Following lunch, they did tree bark rubbings to represent the skin of dinosaurs and placed themselves end to end to show how tall/long dinosaurs were.  A diplodocus measured 28 metres so when Mrs Bolton's class were all laid down they could see just how big that was!  They also created a dinosaur's leg by finding things in the woods to make it.  They completed their day playing a 'yes/no' game to see how good they were at remembering some of the characteristics of dinosaurs!
A GREAT DAY!
